Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed government officials to be careful and responsible in ensuring that every paisa of the people’s money allocated for development projects is spent properly in the interest of the country and for the welfare of its people. He said everyone must be sincere where spending the people’s money is concerned. He also called on them to use the opportunity of government duty for the good of the country and its people.
The prime minister was speaking on Sunday at a meeting in the conference room of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock at the Secretariat to review the ministry’s work and the progress of its development projects. His deputy press secretary, Hasan Shiplu, gave the details.
Officials briefed the prime minister on the ministry’s current work, the development projects taken up, and its future plans and targets.
The prime minister told the meeting: “You have taken up many projects and set many targets. The government will certainly allocate the budget to achieve those targets. But this is the people’s money. I hope all of you will pay attention to making sure that every paisa of the people’s money is spent properly in the interest of the country and for the welfare of its people.”
Describing government duty as a special opportunity to work for the people of the country, Tarique Rahman said those in government service are in a privileged position compared with Bangladesh’s population as a whole. That opportunity should be used for the good of the country and its people.
“All of us who are here are privileged compared with the population of Bangladesh as a whole. Almighty Allah has given us an opportunity to work for the country and for the people,” he said.
The prime minister said each person must try to carry out sincerely whatever work they have the opportunity to do. “Whatever opportunity each of us has to work, may we do that work sincerely. All of us must make that effort,” he said.
Noting that the opportunity to serve does not last for ever, he said whoever holds a responsibility at any time must use it properly for the good of the country and its people. Everyone must be mindful of spending their time in office for people’s benefit.
Closing the meeting with a call on the officials to do their duty sincerely, Tarique Rahman said: “Come, let us all try to make sure that, for as long as each of us has the opportunity, we use it properly for the people and the country.”
Officials asked to give their views
The prime minister called on the ministry’s officials to give their views more actively. He said the field experience and observations of officials working at different levels can play an important part in the government’s decisions. The practical experience officials gain in the field can help the government’s planning and decision-making.
He said the progress of the ministry’s work would be discussed again in future, and hoped officials would set out their experience, observations and opinions more openly at later meetings.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid, State Minister Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, the ministry’s secretary, Delwar Hossain, and senior officials were present.
