Canadian poet and writer Anne Carson has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in literature. The Swedish Academy announced her name on Thursday.
According to an NDTV report, she has been awarded the prize for her distinctive treatment of language, memory, myth and human experience in modern poetry.
The Nobel committee’s announcement said Anne Carson has presented ancient literature and the varied experience of modern life afresh in her poetry and prose. Her writing shows a unique blend of poetry, translation, essay and dramatic work. Her experimental approach to language and her deep inquiry into the human have made her one of the most important writers of contemporary literature.
Anne Carson was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1950. She studied classical literature, and the influence of Greek and Roman literature later became important in her writing. Over a long literary career she has won particular renown for poetry, essays, translation and prose.
Her notable books include Autobiography of Red, The Beauty of the Husband, Nox and Red Doc>. Love, separation, desire, death and memory are themes that recur in her writing.
With the Nobel Prize in literature, Carson has also set a new milestone for Canadian letters. She will receive the Nobel medal and diploma and a cash award.
The winners of the Nobel Prizes in the various categories are announced in October each year. The winner of the literature prize is formally announced at a ceremony in Stockholm, the Swedish capital.
