Business and Finance News:
Minister of Information Jahir Uddin Swapan said, “We are bearing the burden of a Tk 30 lakh crore loan debt. The incumbent government has to bear the brunt of the flawed economics of the Awami League government.”
He made these remarks on Wednesday (May 13) at an award distribution ceremony for the finalists of the nationwide Islamic competition ‘Illuminated Month of Ramadan.
The Minister of Information said, “We have inherited a situation where the economy, due to the plundering by the previous government, is burdened with a debt of 30 trillion taka. We have to pay off 5 billion dollars in foreign debt every year. Our export earnings are only around 40 billion dollars annually. Remittances bring us 20 to 22 billion dollars. Our economy is import-dependent, and we have to import goods worth 60-70 billion dollars. As a result, we have to manage a deficit economy and a deficit budget.
The minister said, “We have to bear the responsibility of the past government’s looting,” noting that it will take at least two years for the current administration to make the country self-reliant again from the shattered and ruined economy. He emphasized the need to keep all voters alert so that no one can politically divide them during this complex period of economic crisis recovery.
Jahir Uddin Swapan stated, “For thousands of years, people of various religions and castes have lived peacefully in this country. There was no opportunity for conflict or opposition to arise. But those who seized state power without a vote and in a disconnected manner, and who wanted to maintain that power, created divisions among the people for various reasons. One such division is creating religious animosity.”
The Information Minister added, “We engage in constructive debates with other opposition parties in the National Assembly, and we will continue to do so. Because it is through constructive debates that we can put the country on the right track. However, we must remain vigilant so that no one brings our parliamentary criticism onto the streets and creates political and social unrest again.”
He further appealed to the scholars and religious leaders present at the event to remain alert in this matter, saying, “If we fail to maintain a peaceful social environment over the next two years, we won’t be able to revive the broken economy. We won’t be able to sustain our daily economic and peaceful social-religious life.”
The minister also emphasized that social stability in future politics is an important issue, and those who discuss religious values can become significant partners in this endeavor.
