The number of smartphone users keeps growing. Phones with more storage have come on the market, but many people find their device’s storage filling up after a while. One of the main reasons is unnecessary photos, videos and other files arriving on WhatsApp and downloading automatically. That reduces the phone’s storage quickly and can increase data usage too. WhatsApp’s automatic download and media save settings can be controlled very easily, however.
What is auto download?
When auto download is switched on in WhatsApp, photos, videos, audio and other files arriving in a chat or a group can download automatically according to the settings chosen. So these files build up in the phone’s storage even when they are not needed. The auto download settings can be changed to stop unnecessary media collecting.
How to turn auto download off
To turn off auto download in WhatsApp, first go to the app’s settings. Then enter the Storage and Data option. In the Media Auto-Download section there, you can decide what kinds of media download automatically over mobile data, over Wi-Fi and while roaming.
You can turn off automatic downloading for every kind of media if you wish. Photos or videos you do need can then be downloaded manually later.
The media visibility setting can also be used to stop photos from a particular chat or group appearing automatically in the phone’s gallery. Turning this setting off for groups you do not need will keep their media out of the gallery.
Why turn it off?
With auto download off, unnecessary photos, videos and files will not pile up on the phone by themselves. That makes it possible to reduce mobile data use and avoid needless pressure on storage. The setting can be particularly effective for groups where large numbers of photos and videos arrive regularly.
