A man named Shahidul Islam has died after a mango stone lodged in his windpipe while he was eating the fruit in Bhangbaria village of Alamdanga upazila, Chuadanga.
The accident happened on Saturday morning at his home in the West Para of Bhangbaria village.
Shahidul Islam, 55, was the son of the late Badar Uddin Mondol of the village and was a very familiar face in the area. Alamdanga police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Bani Israil confirmed the information.
Family and local sources said Shahidul Islam was eating a ripe mango at his home on Saturday morning when a piece of the fruit accidentally became lodged in his windpipe. He began to struggle for breath almost immediately and died at his home while writhing in distress.
As the news spread, a pall of grief fell over the whole of Bhangbaria village, with no one able to accept losing a beloved neighbour so suddenly. Mourning is now under way in the victim’s family.
