A farmer named Shahidul Islam, 60, has died of suspected electrocution while irrigating his farmland in Gangni, Meherpur. The accident happened around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday (May 31) in a field near Morka Bazar in Gangni upazila.

Shahidul Islam was the son of the late Shahadat Mondol of Baniapukur village in the upazila.

Local sources said he owned a mill at Morka Bazar and also farmed in a nearby field. When he went to switch on an electric irrigation pump in the morning, he came into contact with the current and was seriously injured. Locals rescued him and took him to Gangni Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Dr Budha Dipto Das of the emergency department at Gangni Upazila Health Complex said Shahidul Islam had died before being brought to the hospital. Those who brought him in said he had been electrocuted, but the exact cause of death could not be confirmed without an autopsy.

Gangni police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Uttam Kumar Das said police were sent to the scene after initial reports of electrocution, but no clear sign of it was found. He said Shahidul Islam could also have died of a stroke, noting that he had reportedly suffered two strokes before. The matter is being investigated and necessary legal steps are being taken.
