The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has directed students to delete social-media posts and videos supporting the ongoing student movement in Delhi. Several students of the institute had posted such videos on Instagram in solidarity with the protest and hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.

A student who did not wish to be named said they were told on Thursday, July 23, to remove the posts on the instructions of the dean and a faculty adviser. A message sent to students said that, following the authorities’ intervention, all videos and posts expressing solidarity were being taken down.

Students across the country have recently been backing the Jantar Mantar movement through slogans, banners and social-media videos. Against that backdrop, the IIT Madras authorities’ step has prompted discussion among students.
