The total education budget for fiscal 2026-27 is 1,36,606 crore taka — 2 percent of GDP, against 1.39 percent in the outgoing year, when the total education budget was 87,205 crore taka. Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury presented the budget in parliament on Thursday (11 June).
Of the total, the secondary and higher education division has been allocated 57,301 crore taka, primary education 46,737 crore taka, and technical and madrasa education 18,457 crore taka. The proposed 2026-27 budget had earlier been discussed at the cabinet meeting ahead of its presentation.
In 2025-26, finance adviser Salehuddin Ahmed proposed a national budget of about 7,90,000 crore taka, of which the two education ministries were allocated 95,644 crore taka — about 12.1 percent of the national budget. In the outgoing Awami League’s 2024-25 fiscal year, the two divisions of the education ministry and the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education had an allocation of 94,710 crore taka, when the national budget was 7,97,000 crore taka — about 11 percent of the national budget. There has long been a demand to allocate 20 percent of the national budget to education.
