In protest at the HSC examinations being held on Monday despite continuous rain and waterlogging, students of various colleges have taken position in front of the south plaza of the parliament building, demanding the education minister’s resignation. At about 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday (July 14), they broke through a police barricade and moved in front of the parliament building. The students said they would continue their movement until their demands were met.
Earlier, at 5 p.m., City College examinee Md Miraj Hosen announced on behalf of the protesting students at Science Lab that the education minister must resign by 6 p.m. that evening and apologise to the nation for his inconsistent remarks. He said the examination held on Monday (July 13) must be held again, taking into account those who sat the exam in uncomfortable conditions and those who could not, that the next day’s examination must be cancelled and a new exam routine published, and that the standard of the question papers must be student-friendly.
On the day, the students first blockaded a road at about 11:30 a.m. and held a sit-in for about 45 minutes, then withdrew and marched via Dhaka College and New Market to take position in front of the Dhaka University vice-chancellor’s residence. From there, under police escort, they went to the Dhaka Education Board and stayed for some time before returning to the Science Lab intersection and beginning a second road blockade. This created severe traffic congestion in Science Lab, New Market, Elephant Road and surrounding areas, though the protesting students allowed emergency-service ambulances to pass freely on humanitarian grounds.
