Distribution of long-awaited retirement and welfare trust funds for teachers will begin on Saturday at an event in Dhaka’s Osmani Memorial Auditorium, to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
The planned number of beneficiaries has been raised from 119,000 to 123,000. Retirement benefits will go to 70,119 teachers and employees and welfare trust benefits to 53,477 applicants. Teachers will receive about 450,000 taka in retirement benefits and 239,000 taka from the welfare trust.
The funds come from teacher contributions, bank interest, government grants and bond facilities. Until 2019, six percent of basic salary was deducted monthly for retirement and four percent for welfare; students also contribute 100 taka a year, of which 70 taka goes to retirement and 30 taka to welfare.
