July Martyrs’ Day observed with state honours in Jashore

Like the rest of the country, the historic ‘July Martyrs’ Day’ was observed with state honours in Jashore. To mark the day, separate rallies, wreath-laying and remembrance meetings were organised on Thursday (16 July) by the district administration, district BNP and district Jamaat.

Deep respect was paid to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the July 2024 mass uprising by laying wreaths at the ‘July Memorial’ at Bakultala in the town.

At around 10am, a colourful rally set out from the deputy commissioner’s office premises led by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Ashek Hasan. The rally circled the town’s main roads and ended at the July Memorial at Bakultala.

There, DC Mohammad Ashek Hasan first laid a wreath on behalf of the district administration. Superintendent of Police Syed Rafiqul Islam then paid respects to the martyrs on behalf of the district police.

Also present were Zilla Parishad administrator and district BNP general secretary Md Delwar Hossain Khokon, Jashore municipality administrator Md Rafiqul Islam, Additional District Magistrate (Revenue) Kamalesh Majumder, Additional District Magistrate (General) Sujan Sarkar, Additional District Magistrate (Education and ICT) Khan Masum Billah, Additional Superintendent of Police Rajibul Islam, along with officials of various district administration departments, staff of government, private and autonomous bodies, and teachers and students of various educational institutions. About 140-150 people took part in the administration’s programme.

Separately, at around 10:30am, district BNP and its affiliated bodies took out a rally from the party office at Laldighi Par. Led by district BNP president Advocate Syed Saberul Haque Sabu, the rally circled various roads in the town and ended at the July Memorial.

There, under the leadership of the party’s central vice-chairman Prof Nargis Begum, district BNP president Advocate Syed Saberul Haque Sabu and general secretary Delwar Hossain Khokon, leaders and workers laid wreaths and paid their respects to the martyrs.

Also present were district BNP organising secretary Munir Siddiqui Bachchu, Jashore city BNP president Rafiqul Islam Chowdhury Mulluk Chand, general secretary Ehsanul Haque Setu, acting president of Sadar upazila BNP Abdar Hossain, district Jubo Dal president M Tamal Ahmed, general secretary Ansarul Haque Rana, district Swechchhasebak Dal convener Mostafa Amir Faisal, member secretary Rajidur Rahman Sagar, district Chhatra Dal member secretary Shahnewaz Imran, and a large number of leaders and workers of the BNP and its affiliated bodies.

In addition, the Press Club Jashore and various journalists’ bodies, and the Jashore district unit of the National Citizen Party (NCP) — led by chief coordinator Nuruzzaman — also laid wreaths at the July Memorial to honour the martyrs.

Administration officials, leaders of various political parties, Jashore district leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement, representatives of various social and cultural organisations and people of all walks laid floral tributes at the July Memorial. After paying respects, prayers were offered for the salvation of the martyrs’ souls and for the peace and prosperity of the country.

In the afternoon, the district Jamaat took out a rally, which set out from the Eidgah intersection and circled the main roads.
