New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and his wife have received death threats over his anti-Israel stance. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Mamdani said they had been threatened with death after he made public remarks about Israel and the war in Gaza. He did not make clear who had made the threats.

He said: “It is hard to prepare yourself for a death threat. But when you are ready to stand up for everyone’s rights, you also have to be ready to bear the consequences.”

Mamdani also said he had faced similar threats while a member of the New York State legislature. He said he had been threatened then for criticising US military aid to Israel and for opposing the killing of Palestinian civilians.

Mamdani said the threats had begun before he became mayor and had continued after he took office. He said his wife had also faced criticism and threats because of his stance on Israel and Gaza.

In a separate interview with The New York Times, referring to the arrest warrant issued against Netanyahu by the International Criminal Court (ICC), Mamdani said judicial proceedings against Netanyahu should begin in The Hague.

Mamdani later clarified that New York City has no independent legal power to enforce the ICC’s arrest warrant. He said the responsibility for any such step would rest with the US federal government.
