Australian high commissioner pays courtesy call on opposition leader

Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Susan Ryle has paid a courtesy call on opposition leader and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami chief Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, MP.

The meeting was held in a cordial, positive and friendly atmosphere at the opposition leader’s office in the Parliament Building at 11:30 a.m. on Monday. Also present with the Australian high commissioner were the Australian High Commission’s First Secretary (Political) Harry Thomson and First Secretary (Political) Anna Peterson.

Present with the opposition leader at the time were the opposition leader’s foreign affairs adviser, barrister Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem Arman, MP; Marzia Akhtar, MP; Mardia Mamtaj, MP; and foreign affairs advisory team member Ali Ahmad Mabrur.

The meeting discussed the opposition leader’s upcoming visit to Australia and various ways to make democracy more meaningful in the period after the parliamentary election, the roles of the government and the opposition, and ways to further strengthen parliamentary democracy.

The meeting also held detailed discussions on a durable solution to the Rohingya crisis and on developing Bangladesh’s economic potential. The development of the energy sector, in particular, received special attention at the meeting.

At one stage of the discussion, the Australian high commissioner praised the constructive role of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in parliament. The two sides also discussed various ways to advance matters of mutual bilateral interest in the future.
