In Islam, marriage is a sacred act of worship, a responsible commitment and an honourable covenant ordained by Allah. It protects chastity, safeguards society from moral decline and establishes family peace. A marriage completed with a sound intention and lawful Sunnah procedures is considered blessed.

The Quran calls the marital bond a solemn covenant (Surah An-Nisa: 21), and the Prophet said marriage is his Sunnah (Ibn Majah: 1846). Muslims are advised to choose a spouse for faith and character rather than only beauty, wealth or status (Bukhari: 5090; Muslim: 1466).

For a woman’s marriage, the wali’s consent is described as essential (Abu Dawud: 2085; Tirmidhi: 1101). A valid nikah requires at least two upright Muslim witnesses (Bayhaqi: 1636). Mahr is the wife’s lawful right and must be given voluntarily (Quran, An-Nisa: 4).

The traditional nikah sermon includes verses from Ali Imran 102, An-Nisa 1 and Al-Ahzab 70-71. The simple offer and acceptance by the wali and groom is the Sunnah method. A post-marriage prayer asks Allah to bless the couple and unite them in goodness (Tirmidhi: 1091).

Islam encourages simple marriage and forbids dowry demands, arrogance, wastefulness, indecency, and other practices described as unlawful. The article cites the Quran’s warning that the wasteful are brothers of Satan (Surah Bani Israil: 27).
