The Canadian government has issued a new travel advisory for its citizens visiting Bangladesh, recommending a high degree of caution.
Global Affairs Canada said Bangladesh’s security situation has been unstable since July 2024 and protests or political gatherings could become violent at any time, disrupting businesses and transport.
It advised avoiding all travel to the Chittagong Hill Tracts because of armed-group clashes and kidnapping risks. Access to Rohingya refugee-camp areas in Cox’s Bazar is also strictly controlled.
The advisory cited risks of terrorist attacks in Dhaka and previous attacks in crowded places such as hotels, places of worship and tourist sites. Foreign women were advised not to travel alone at night.
Health risks include typhoid, hepatitis and dengue, while medical facilities are described as inadequate; serious cases may require transfer to Singapore or Thailand.
The advisory also highlighted strict local laws: drug offences can carry the death penalty, alcohol is completely prohibited for Muslims and photographing government facilities is prohibited.
