Fifty-four people have died so far in the devastating floods caused by recent heavy rain, hill torrents and landslides in the country, and another 39 have been injured. In this sudden natural disaster in seven districts, 155,311 families have been left waterlogged, and the total number of affected people stands at 609,411.
The information was learned from the latest updated report of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief on Monday. According to the report, seven of the country’s districts are currently facing a flood situation. The flood-hit districts are Khagrachhari, Rangamati, Bandarban, Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram, Moulvibazar and Habiganj. A total of 59 upazilas in these districts have been inundated by the disaster. In addition, 334 unions and 12 municipalities in the affected areas have been hit by the floods.
According to the ministry’s data, a total of 155,311 families across the country are currently spending their days waterlogged, and in all the number of people affected by floods and hill torrents in these seven districts stands at 609,411.
So far, a total of 54 people have died in various places in the disaster, and another 39 have been injured. District-wise figures for the dead and injured show that of the 54 deaths, the highest number was in Cox’s Bazar district, with 31 deaths. In addition, 13 people died in Chattogram, six in Bandarban, three in Rangamati and one in Moulvibazar. Of the 39 injured, 24 are in Cox’s Bazar, 12 in Chattogram, two in Bandarban and one in Khagrachhari.
A total of 1,042 shelters have been opened by the government to provide emergency shelter to people affected and hit by the floods, where 38,422 people in distress have already taken shelter, the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief said.
