PATUAKHALI — A union council member has been missing for two days in Patuakhali. On the day he disappeared, last Tuesday, he posted “I will fly to the sky” on his Facebook account. His wife has filed a general diary at the local police station.
The missing man, Shahidul Islam Jomaddar, 38, is the member for Ward No. 3 of Lohalia Union Parishad in Patuakhali Sadar Upazila. He lived with his wife, Afia Jhumur, 34, on First Lane in Sabujbagh in Patuakhali town. He is from Lohalia village in Lohalia Union.
Shahidul’s wife, Afia Jhumur, said the couple ate lunch together last Tuesday. Shahidul then left the house saying he had personal work to attend to. Around 6 p.m. he called her and said he needed some medicines for his mother and was going to their village home to deliver them. He said he would return to their town home by 9 or 10 p.m. When she called his mobile phone several times after 9 p.m., he did not answer. After speaking with his elder sister, Shahnaz Begum, she learned that Shahidul had left his mobile phone charging at the village home and gone out. He could not be traced through the night. The next day she filed a general diary at the Sadar police station.
Afia Jhumur said the couple had married on Dec. 18 last year. She said she did not know whether her husband had any personal or social ties or disputes with anyone.
Local residents said Shahidul Islam phoned a local man named Babu, who rents out motorcycle rides, and called him to the village home on the evening of his disappearance. Shahidul then left his two phones charging and walked out of the house. He posted the Facebook status and then left the phones behind.
Babu, the motorcyclist, said he dropped Shahidul Islam off at the foot of Lohalia Bridge at around 7:30 p.m. that evening. He later learned from local residents that Shahidul was missing.
The officer in charge of Sadar police station, Mohammad Moniruzzaman, said Thursday afternoon: “Yesterday morning a woman named Afia Jhumur filed a general diary at the station saying her husband had gone missing. We have since learned that Shahidul Islam is the member of Lohalia Union. On the day he disappeared he himself posted a Facebook status saying ‘I will fly to the sky.’ That has raised many questions. We are investigating all angles.”
