A father and son have been killed by lightning while cutting jute in Thakurgaon Sadar upazila. The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon in Mohabbatpur Ganeshpara village of Jamalpur union in Sadar, said Shahjahan Ali, officer-in-charge (OC) of Thakurgaon Sadar Police Station.
The dead are Anwar Prabhu, 55, and his son Nimai, 23, residents of Mohabbatpur Ganeshpara village in Jamalpur union.
According to local people and police, Anwar Prabhu and his son Nimai went on Wednesday morning to cut jute planted in a field next to their home. Around midday, as they were cutting the jute, it suddenly began to rain, and they carried on working in the rain. Lightning then struck the spot, and both Anwar Prabhu and his son Nimai died there of their injuries.
Local resident Sirajul Islam said: “Lightning took the lives of father and son at the same time. It is a heartbreaking incident. A shadow of grief has fallen over the whole village.”
OC Shahjahan Ali said: “The father and son died in today’s lightning strike due to a lack of caution. I urge everyone to stay alert. An unnatural-death case has been filed at the police station over the deaths.”
