An elderly man has been hacked and beaten to death in Narail Sadar upazila, allegedly by residents of a neighboring village, over a dispute originating from a local football match, police said.
The incident occurred on Friday afternoon in the Polaidanga-Maharag area of Bhadrabila union.
Family members, including the victim’s daughter-in-law Kakli Khanam, said a dispute had arisen four days earlier between young men from Polaidanga-Maharag and Bhadrabila villages over a local football match. A meeting was scheduled for Friday afternoon to resolve the matter.
Mostafa Kazi, 75, was walking from his home toward Polaidanga market to attend the meeting when residents of Bhadrabila village, who had been lying in wait behind banana plants along the road in the Maharag area, attacked him with sharp weapons and a hammer, inflicting fatal wounds to his legs and head, according to the family’s account.
Monsur Ali, a relative of the victim, said: “He came to settle the football dispute and was killed. They found him alone and murdered him. We condemn this act and demand justice.”
Dr. Asif Akbar, the duty physician at Narail District Hospital, said Mostafa Kazi was dead before arrival at the hospital. His body showed wounds consistent with sharp weapons and blunt-force trauma. An autopsy is underway.
Narail Sadar police station officer-in-charge Ajay Kumar Kundu said efforts are underway to arrest those involved. Police have been deployed in the area to maintain order.
