A crowd has detained a 35-year-old man and handed him to police over the alleged rape and strangulation of a five-year-old girl in Ramchandrapur village of Narail Sadar, police said.
The man was detained around 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 21, from the Dattapara area, Narail Sadar police officer-in-charge Ajay Kumar Kundu confirmed. The accused is a resident of Ramchandrapur village.
According to police and relatives, the girl — a pre-primary pupil at a local government primary school — was allegedly raped and strangled on Monday afternoon in Ramchandrapur village of Auria union in Narail Sadar upazila. The accused fled after the incident.
The girl’s uncle said the child had been playing on the road beside their home on Monday afternoon when a neighbour called her over. When she did not return after about an hour, family members searched nearby homes and later recovered her body, covered with cloth, from the floor of the man’s room. The man lived alone; though married, his wife and children had not been at the home for a long time.
Local residents said the rape and killing of the child could not be accepted and demanded the swift arrest of anyone involved.
A doctor on duty at Narail District Hospital said the child was brought in dead with marks of injury on her body, and that the body would be handed to the family after an inquest and autopsy.
