An allegation has surfaced that a Tk 150,000 bounty was announced on Facebook to kill “July fighters” — participants in and those injured during the anti-discrimination student movement — in Narail. Amirul Islam, member secretary of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, filed a written complaint against 11 accused at Narail Sadar police station on Monday (July 6) night. According to the complaint, some fugitive leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League used social media at various times centered around the month of July to issue this inducement and threat against students and fighters active in the movement. After the matter came to light, the victims approached police to ensure their safety and bring those involved to justice.

The 11 accused are Md. Mizanur Rahman Noyon, Sourav Karmakar, Md. Sajibul Islam Hriday, Shahadat Hossain Raihan, Emon Sikder, Md. Milon Jomadder, Md. Israfil, Md. Sajib Chowdhury, S.K. Aslam, Md. Abdullah Al Jaber Lotus, and Md. Jubayer Sheikh.

Regarding the matter, Amirul Islam, member secretary of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, said the accused, who are in hiding, are issuing such provocative threats as the month of July approaches. He said rumors of an attack on him had also circulated recently in an attempt to inflame the situation. He demanded that the accused be brought to justice swiftly and warned of a stronger movement if justice is not served.

Responding to the allegation, Abdullah Al Jaber Lotus said the complaint is entirely baseless, false and motivated. He claimed he does not personally know most of the individuals named in the complaint and has no acquaintance or contact with the complainant. He demanded an impartial investigation, saying that if there is specific evidence to support the allegation, it should be made public. He said he respects the law and has pledged full cooperation with the investigation.

Confirming the matter, Narail District Superintendent of Police Mohammad Al Mamun Sikder said a written complaint has been received from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. Police are already investigating the matter and will take appropriate legal action after identifying those responsible.

The incident of provocative campaigning on social media has raised concern among ordinary students and residents of Narail. It remains to be seen how much of the truth emerges from the police investigation.
