Authorities have closed 16 important Delhi metro stations after security risks arose around the ongoing protests by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) in New Delhi. The sudden decision left ordinary commuters in severe confusion over rerouted trains and alternative ways to reach their destinations.

Around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said the entry and exit gates of 16 metro stations on various routes, including the Blue, Yellow and Violet lines, had been temporarily closed for security reasons.

The closed stations are Lok Kalyan Marg, Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, Ramakrishna Ashram Marg, Barakhamba Road, Supreme Court, Seva Tirth, Janpath, Mandi House, Central Secretariat, ITO, Delhi Gate, Indraprastha, Khan Market, Jor Bagh and Shivaji Stadium.

Interchange facilities remain open at Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House and Central Secretariat. The DMRC did not say when all the stations would reopen.

The closures after 11:30 a.m. caused disorder among passengers. Trains stopped at many stations but people could not get out, blocked by police barricades. Long queues and arguments with police were reported at Mandi House.

One commuter said that with Mandi House and five nearby stations closed, he had to book a bike taxi to get to the office. Additional police have been deployed to keep control.
