The United States’ special envoy for South and Central Asia, Sergio Gor, has arrived in Dhaka on a three-day visit. The information was given in a post on the US embassy in Dhaka’s verified Facebook page on Thursday afternoon.
In the post, the US ambassador to Dhaka, Brent T Christensen, said: “I am delighted to welcome my friend, the United States’ special envoy for South and Central Asia, Sergio Gor, to Bangladesh. His visit will further strengthen the strategic partnership between the United States and Bangladesh, regional security and economic cooperation.”
On the first day of the visit, Sergio Gor will hold talks with the foreign minister, Khalilur Rahman. Diplomatic sources said he is due to see the situation of Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar at first hand on Friday.
Diplomatic and international-relations analysts consider the visit significant against the background of the prime minister Tarique Rahman’s visit to Beijing, Bangladesh’s recent engagement with various countries and recent regional diplomatic activity.
Sergio Gor is the third most senior US official to visit Dhaka from Washington since the BNP government took office last February. Earlier, the assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asia, Paul Kapur, visited in March, and the assistant trade representative for South and Central Asia, Brendan Lynch, in May.
According to diplomatic sources, discussion of Bangladesh’s current foreign-policy priorities, its regional strategic position and the future of Dhaka-Washington relations will feature prominently in Gor’s visit. In particular, against the interest created internationally in Bangladesh’s strategic position after the prime minister’s visit to China in June, the foreign minister’s visit to Moscow the same month and the Turkish foreign minister’s visit to Dhaka, Washington’s assessment may also be reflected in this visit. If necessary, he may convey the message of President Donald Trump’s administration to Bangladesh’s leadership.
President Donald Trump appointed Sergio Gor — a businessman, politician and former official of the president’s office at the White House — as the US State Department’s special envoy for South and Central Asia in August 2025. Since that appointment he has emerged as one of the important figures in Washington’s regional diplomacy.
In January this year Sergio Gor began work as the US ambassador in Delhi. With New Delhi as the centre of his activity, he is responsible for advancing the United States’ strategic relations with the countries of South Asia, including Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bhutan, alongside India. Gor’s visits to Nepal and Sri Lanka after taking charge as special envoy are a reflection of that regional strategy.
