The Amir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Dhaka metropolitan north, Mohammad Selim Uddin, has issued a stern warning over the implementation of the July charter. Speaking at an art competition held in the capital, he said the charter must be implemented to the letter in the spirit of the July mass uprising — otherwise the government would have to pay a heavy price.
He made the remarks as chief guest at an art competition titled “July in Brushstrokes,” held in memory of the July martyrs at the IES School and College ground in Uttara in the capital at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, organised by the July Mass Uprising Celebration Committee, Uttara.
The event was chaired by Rokeya Begum MP — the mother of July martyr Jabir Ibrahim and convener of the July Celebration Committee, Uttara — and conducted by member secretary Kamrul Hasan. Among those present were principal Ashraful Haque, Jamal Uddin, Dr Mostafa Faisal Parvez, Ibrahim Khalil, Mazharul Islam, Abu Bakar Siddique, Gazi Monir Hossain, Israfil Hossain, Surujjaman, Zakir Hossain, Tahmid Huzaifa, Talha Jobayer Sajib and Imran Hossain.
Mohammad Selim Uddin said July is a symbol of a historic mass movement in Bangladesh’s history. In his account, a new possibility was created through the united movement of students and the public against autocracy and fascism. But because of political failure, a lack of goodwill and an excessive attraction to power, he said, that achievement is today at risk.
He further said July must not be allowed to be trampled in any way. If it fails, he warned, the existence of the country and of national identity could come under threat. At the same time he claimed that patriotic students and the public are ready to confront any conspiracy.
Addressing the government, Selim Uddin said it needs to abandon negative politics and return to positive political practice. Otherwise, he said, history will not forgive the government.
On the July charter, he alleged that the government is trying to avoid implementing the charter by offering interpretations of the constitution, and is creating confusion over it. In his claim, such a position should be abandoned and the full implementation of the July charter ensured immediately.
