The Bangladesh government and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have signed an agreement to strengthen the management of climate-change-induced displacement in South Asia. Bangladesh will receive €1.25 million to implement the three-year, European Union-funded project.
The bilateral agreement was signed on Thursday at the Economic Relations Division (ERD) in the capital.
Md Shahriar Kader Siddiky, secretary of the Economic Relations Division, signed for the Bangladesh government, and Dr. Lara Tom Bonde, head of the IOM’s Bangladesh mission, signed for the IOM.
Under the agreement, the total cost of implementing the three-year EU-funded project has been set at €1.25 million.
The project will collect data on populations displaced by climate change. Research-based knowledge and experience on managing displacement will also be exchanged among South Asian countries.
It will also carry out activities to involve expatriate Bangladeshis in climate-risk management, increase local communities’ climate resilience and strengthen regional cooperation in tackling climate-related risks.
Those present at the signing included ERD additional secretary A K M Sohel, joint secretary Dr. Kazi Shahjahan, senior assistant secretary Dr. Rajibul Alam, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change joint secretary Fahmida Haque Khan, IOM national programme officer Ashfaqur Rahman Khan and national consultant Dr. S M Morshed.
