Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and opposition leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman visited students receiving treatment after clashes linked to demands over Jagannath University’s second campus.
Rahman visited leaders of the Jagannath University Central Students’ Union and other students at a private hospital in Dhaka on Wednesday, checked on their condition and discussed treatment with hospital authorities.
He alleged that Islami Chhatra Shibir activists had been attacked at Jagannath University, Dhaka Alia Madrasa, Dhaka College, Bangla College and other institutions, and said several people had been injured. Those allegations were not independently verified in the report.
Rahman called for an end to violence in educational institutions, impartial enforcement of the law and a healthy political environment.
On Tuesday, students holding placards outside the central auditorium to press three demands, including transferring work on the university’s second campus to the army, became involved in arguments and chases with a proctorial team and Chhatra Dal activists, according to the report. Jagannath University Central Students’ Union vice president Riazul Islam, general secretary Abdul Alim Arif, health affairs secretary Nur Mohammad and several other students were injured.
