Fifteen arrested, including journalist, at banned Awami League meeting in Chattogram

Police arrested 15 people, including a journalist, from a meeting of the banned Awami League in the Mansurabad area of Double Mooring police station in Chattogram city. They were arrested Saturday night.

Police said leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations had gathered in the Mansurabad area to hold discussions marking August 15. After receiving the information, police raided the fifth floor of the “Royal Touch” apartment building, owned by Haji Fazlul Karim Chowdhury, adjacent to the Mansurabad WAPDA Colony, on Saturday evening and detained them. They were subsequently shown as arrested. Five of those arrested are women.

Among those arrested are Advocate Umme Habiba, secretary for local government affairs on the central executive committee of the Bangladesh Krishak League and a member of the Chattogram District Council; Iskandar Mirza, office secretary of Halishahar thana Awami League; Shuvo Aich, religious affairs secretary of Chattogram Metropolitan Awami League’s Bangabandhu Parishad; Kamela Khanam Rupa, former vice chairman of Chandanaish upazila and joint convener of Chattogram South District Jubo Mahila League; Sujala Antara, a member of Chattogram Metropolitan Mahila Awami League and former assistant secretary of Chhatra League; and Sharmina Yasmin Nishu, former women’s affairs secretary of Bangabandhu Parishad.

Also arrested were Sanjay Kanti Nath, S M Salauddin, Ahsan Abid, Sultan Mahmud Zidan, Partha Pratim Nandy, journalist Jishu Roy Chowdhury, Mashiur Rahman Abir, Ayesha Heaven, and Mohammad Zakir Hossain.

Double Mooring Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahinur Alam confirmed the arrests, saying a case has been filed at Double Mooring police station, numbered 12. Following questioning, those arrested have been sent to court.
