A fire at Khulna City Medical College Hospital was brought under control around midnight on Thursday (June 11) after a two-and-a-half-hour effort. By around 2:30 a.m., more than 250 patients had been transferred to various hospitals. Fire service personnel also completed rescue work at the site.
Abdul Hamid, an administrative officer at the hospital, said no patient was harmed in the fire. Alongside bringing the fire under control, all measures were taken to keep the patients safe, he said.
The hospital had more than 250 patients. Among them, seven in the most critical condition were moved to Ad-din Hospital. Others were shifted quickly to Islami Hospital, Gazi Medical and other hospitals. The hospital’s services have been fully suspended. Authorities are in discussion. Assessment of the damage and an investigation into the cause are under way.
Arif Ul Islam, senior station officer of Khulna Fire Service, said 12 units worked to bring the fire under control. It was contained by around 10:30 p.m., and the fire was fully extinguished by midnight. No information on any casualties was found. Rescue work was completed by 3 a.m.
According to eyewitnesses and fire service sources, the fire broke out in the Khulna City Medical College Hospital building at 9:35 p.m. As smoke spread through the entire building, patients and their relatives began running in panic. Many came down to the ground floor, while others went towards the upper floors. On receiving the news, 12 fire service units began working to bring the fire under control. It was contained within a short time.
