World Environment Day was marked at Mishripara in Patuakhali’s Kuakata with a colourful rally, a discussion and the distribution of fruit-tree saplings among students, under the theme “Inspired by nature, for the climate, for our future.” The rally set off from the grounds of Mishripara Fatema High Secondary School at about 11am on Tuesday (9 June), circled various roads of Mishripara and returned to the school grounds, followed by a discussion in the school hall.

The discussion, organised under the “Proyash Project” run by Caritas’ Barishal region, was chaired by project field officer Md Jamal Hossain. Shafiqul Alam, upazila deputy team leader of the Cyclone Preparedness Programme (CPP), attended as chief guest. Special guests included Mishripara Fatema High Secondary School head teacher Golam Mostafa and Md Mizanur Rahman, executive director of the Coastal Human Development Organisation (CHDO/Sicoda). Teachers, students and local notables were present.

Speakers said rising temperatures, frequent natural disasters and environmental degradation driven by global climate change are taking on alarming proportions, with coastal people already feeling the negative effects. They stressed planting more trees, cutting the use of polythene and single-use plastic, and raising public awareness to protect the environment. After the discussion, fruit-tree saplings of various species were distributed among more than a hundred students. The event was moderated by Caritas’ Hasan Mahmud.
