The body of a farmer, Masuk Miya, 45, has been recovered from the Dhalai River in Kamalganj upazila of Moulvibazar, four days after he drowned and went missing.

The body was recovered around 6 a.m. on Wednesday (15 July) from beside a sandbar in the river, in front of the home of a local resident, Mintu Miya, about half a kilometre from the spot where he had gone missing.

Masuk Miya, the farmer who died, was the son of the late Aziz Miya of Hiramati village in Madhabpur union, and the father of three.

According to family and local sources, on Saturday morning (11 July), Balai Dash and Masuk Miya were crossing the Dhalai River to cut grass for their cattle when both were swept away by the strong current. After being carried along for a while, Balai Dash managed to reach the bank, but Masuk Miya was pulled under and went missing. On learning of his disappearance, a diving team from Sylhet, with help from the Kamalganj Fire Service, and local people began a search.

Despite about four hours of searching that day, he could not be found. His relatives combed various points of the river for several days. Finally, on Wednesday morning, local residents saw a body floating beside a sandbar of the Dhalai River in the Patnikona area, about half a kilometre from where he had gone missing; relatives and locals then identified it as Masuk Miya.

Officials of the Kamalganj Fire Service and Civil Defence said their team had been trying hard to recover the missing farmer from the day he disappeared, and that his body had surfaced four days later.

Kamar Uddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kamalganj Police Station, said: “We got the news in the morning, went to the scene, prepared the inquest report and handed the body over to the family.” After the recovery, the funeral prayers were held around 11 a.m. and the burial completed at the family graveyard.
