Announcing an indefinite hunger strike, Abhijit Deepke, founder and convener of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), has demanded the resignation of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Deepke made the announcement after police took the hunger-striking social activist Sonam Wangchuk to hospital in the capital, New Delhi, on Saturday, alleging that police had forcibly removed Wangchuk.

In a video message to the media, Deepke said: “If they think removing Sonam sir will end this movement, they are mistaken. We will stay right here and march toward Parliament on 20 July.” He added: “Until now we had only demanded Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation. But after this deplorable incident, we will now demand Narendra Modi’s resignation too.” The CJP said on the platform X that Abhijit Deepke had begun an indefinite hunger strike.

Police in New Delhi took the hunger-striking activist Sonam Wangchuk to hospital. The youth-led Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) alleged that on the 21st day of the hunger strike, police forcibly removed Wangchuk. A New Delhi police deputy commissioner wrote on X that Wangchuk had been taken to hospital to ensure emergency treatment, on a court order and doctors’ advice, because his physical condition had deteriorated. The 59-year-old Wangchuk has been on hunger strike since 28 June, which he began in solidarity with students’ ongoing protest demanding Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation over alleged irregularities in an entrance exam. Deepke had said Wangchuk had lost about 8.7 kg from the long strike and had grown very weak.
