Six people have died in wildfires in Algeria. Fires are still burning in several areas of the North African country amid a severe heatwave, its interior ministry said.

In a statement, the ministry said: “Six people have died in the wildfires that have spread through several provinces of the country in recent days.” AFP reported the news from Algiers.

The statement said all provinces had been instructed to begin “a comprehensive exercise to survey and list all recorded damage” to help the authorities carry out their responsibility to compensate those affected by the fires.

The interior ministry said the personnel and equipment needed to bring the still-burning fires under control had been deployed.

A vast area of northern Algeria is in the grip of a severe heatwave, which has produced several hundred wildfires. Such fires have killed a number of people in the country in recent years.
