Iran has announced the timing of the burial of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in joint US-Israeli strikes. The committee formed for his commemoration said the janaza and burial ceremonies will be held once the first ten days of Muharram have passed.
Iran’s semi-official Mehr News reported that the committee’s headquarters issued a second statement on Tuesday (9 June) concerning the janaza and commemoration of Khamenei and members of his family. It said extensive preparations are under way to organise the former supreme leader’s commemoration, janaza and burial with dignity, and warned domestic and foreign media against speculation and unverified reports about the timing and details. The statement said that, in keeping with the late leader’s long-standing commitment to the mourning rites of Imam Hussain, the janaza and burial will be held after Ashura, at the close of Muharram’s first ten days. The committee said the relevant authorities and popular organisations are coordinating the final schedule and logistics to ensure proper services for mourners, with details to be announced later from the headquarters.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei assumed office in 1989 as Iran’s second supreme leader after the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, and held the post for 36 years and six months until his death on 28 February 2026.
