The Cumilla University administration has expressed deep sorrow at the killing of Ishayat Shahriar Apratim, the only child of Dr Nahida Begum, associate professor in the Bengali department at the university.

A day of general mourning was observed on the campus on Sunday (September 20) and the university was declared closed. Because of the closure, classes in all the university’s departments and previously scheduled examinations were suspended.

The announcement came in an urgent notice signed by the university registrar, Md Mujibur Rahman Mazumder, on Saturday (September 19).

The notice said the Cumilla University family was deeply grieved and shocked by the brutal killing of a teacher’s child. The university authorities strongly condemned and protested against the incident, and demanded a proper investigation, the swift arrest of those involved and exemplary punishment. They also prayed for Apratim’s soul and expressed deep sympathy with his bereaved family.

Under the administration’s decision, all academic activity on Sunday was stopped for the day of general mourning. New dates for the suspended examinations will be announced later through notices from the departments concerned.

The university registrar, Md Mujibur Rahman Mazumder, said: “The whole Cumilla University family is stunned by such a tragic death of our colleague’s child. We are so grieved that we are in no condition to carry on normal work. A general holiday has therefore been declared today. We strongly demand that those involved in this incident be arrested and brought within the law in the shortest possible time.”
