Around 1,320 Ukrainian soldiers were killed in operations by various Russian battlegroups in the special-military-operation zone in Ukraine over the previous 24 hours, Russia’s defence ministry said, according to a report by the Russian news agency TASS on Saturday (May 30).

Meanwhile, over the past week, Russian forces launched more than 2,300 drone strikes, about 1,560 guided-bomb strikes and 108 missiles of various types against Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, according to Ukraine’s state news agency Ukrinform.

According to the Russian ministry, Ukrainian forces lost about 200 troops in the “North” battlegroup’s area, more than 180 in “West” battlegroup operations, more than 85 in the “South” area, more than 340 in the “Centre” area, more than 455 in the “East” direction and about 60 more in the “Dnepro” battlegroup area.

The ministry also said Russian air defences had, over 24 hours, shot down 10 guided aerial bombs, a missile from a US-made HIMARS multiple-launch rocket system and 352 fixed-wing drones.

By Russia’s claims, since the start of the special military operation its forces have destroyed a total of 671 aircraft, 284 helicopters, 661 surface-to-air missile systems, 29,550 tanks and other armoured combat vehicles, 1,727 multiple-launch rocket systems, 35,136 field artillery guns and mortars, and 62,874 special military vehicles.

Moscow also said that, in response to Ukraine’s alleged “terrorist attacks” on civilian sites on Russian territory, its forces had carried out coordinated strikes — using long-range high-precision land- and air-based weapons and attack drones — on Ukrainian military airfields and fuel, fuel-supply and transport infrastructure. All targets were successfully hit and the intended objectives achieved, the defence ministry said.

The full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, and remains unresolved. Russian forces have captured Ukraine’s Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions and the Luhansk and Donetsk areas of the Donbas. Earlier, in 2014, Russia annexed Crimea through a military operation, later incorporating it through a token referendum.

In the war, which has gone on for more than four years, 50,000 Russian soldiers have been killed, the British broadcaster BBC has reported. President Zelenskyy has said about 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in Russian attacks.
