The United Nations is posthumously awarding the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal to six brave Bangladeshi soldiers who gave their lives for world peace. A special ceremony has been arranged at UN headquarters on June 5 as part of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, where UN Secretary-General António Guterres will personally present the honour.
This year, a total of 68 military, police and civilian peacekeepers who died in the line of duty worldwide are being honoured with the posthumous international medal. Of those, 59 lost their lives on duty last year — among them these six Bangladeshis.
The six Bangladeshi peacekeepers are Private Md Jahangir Alam, Private Md Sabuj Mia, Corporal Md Masud Rana, Private Md Mominul Islam, Private Shamim Reza and Private Shanto Mondol. They were serving with the UN Interim Security Force in the Abyei region and were killed in a sudden drone attack there on December 13, 2025.
