The outgoing president, Md Sahabuddin, has left Bangabhaban with a smile. He left Bangabhaban at about 2:15 p.m. today, Sunday.

It has been learned that Md Sahabuddin will now move into his house in Gulshan.

Bangabhaban sources said Md Sahabuddin took formal leave of Bangabhaban’s officers and staff yesterday, Saturday.

Md Sahabuddin bade farewell to the office of the country’s 22nd president on Friday afternoon. On his resignation, the Speaker, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, took charge as acting president under the constitution.

Although he has taken charge as acting president, Hafiz Uddin will live at the Speaker’s residence in the Jatiya Sangsad complex. He will, however, carry out his official work at the president’s office at Bangabhaban.

On the election of a new president, Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman has said it will be possible to elect a new president in the next session of the Jatiya Sangsad.

Election Commission (EC) sources said the commission will announce the schedule for the presidential election taking the next parliament session into account.

Election commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud said the commission will take a decision on this within a day or two. He said the presidential election will be completed within the 90 days set by the constitution.

He also said that under the constitution the presidential election can be completed within 90 days — that is, by 24 October.

In a term of three years and three months as president, Md Sahabuddin administered the oath to three different governments: the Awami League, the interim government and the BNP. From his nomination as president to his resignation, he was in political discussion for various reasons.
