A court has sentenced a man named Haus Ali to rigorous imprisonment for the remainder of his natural life for killing his former mother-in-law by pouring petrol on her and setting her on fire in Meherpur’s Gangni upazila.
He was also fined Tk 50,000, with an additional six months in prison in default of payment.
Meherpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal judge Ali Masud Sheikh delivered the verdict Thursday (July 9) afternoon.
The convicted man, Haus Ali, is the son of Ahmad Ali of Sholotaka village in Gangni upazila.
According to court sources, Haus Ali had married Ambia Khatun through a family arrangement. From the beginning of the marriage, he faced allegations of abusing his wife and failing to provide for her. Eventually, Ambia Khatun divorced him over these issues.
Angered by the divorce, Haus Ali went to his former in-laws’ house in Shahrabaria village in Gangni upazila on the night of May 7, 2016. Not finding his former wife there, he poured petrol on her mother, Fulsuraton, 66, and set her on fire. Ambia Khatun was in Gangni at the time carrying out election duties.
Hearing Fulsuraton’s screams, locals rushed to the scene and tried to douse the flames. She was first taken to Gangni Upazila Health Complex and later to Meherpur 250-Bed General Hospital, where she died while undergoing treatment.
Ambia Khatun filed a case over the incident under Section 4(1) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000 (amended 2003). Police submitted a charge sheet to the court after completing the investigation.
After reviewing testimony from 18 witnesses, evidence and other exhibits in the case, the court found the charge proven beyond doubt and sentenced Haus Ali to rigorous imprisonment for the remainder of his natural life, along with a fine of Tk 50,000 and an additional six months in prison in default of payment.
