A Mymensingh court sentenced two brothers to death for the murder of a 15-year-old student who was killed over a romantic relationship in Mymensingh Sadar upazila. Each was also fined 50,000 taka.
Two other accused in the case were sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment, fined 20,000 taka each, and given an additional six months of simple imprisonment in default of payment.
Additional District and Sessions Judge (in charge) Md. Shamsuddin delivered the verdict on Thursday afternoon.
Those sentenced to death are Nazmul Haque, 26, and his brother Enamul Haque, both from Bhugoli Nayapara village in Sadar upazila. The other two convicted are their father Ziaul Haque, 57, and uncle Julhas Uddin, 37.
Nazmul, Ziaul, and Julhas were present in court for the verdict. Enamul remains at large.
According to court records, the victim, Saikat Hasan Akash, was a tenth-grade student at Ashtadhar High School. He had been in a relationship with the daughter of local union council member Ziaul Haque. When the family learned of the relationship, they refused to accept it and made a plan to kill the student.
On the night of May 19, 2021, the daughter was used to lure Akash out of his home. He was taken to a secluded location, where his throat was slit. The body was buried to conceal the crime.
After Akash went missing, his family searched extensively. Two days later, on May 21, police conducted an operation and recovered the buried body.
The victim’s father Md. Akram Hosen filed a murder case at Mymensingh Kotwali Model police station on May 22, 2021, naming 14 accused. After investigation, police filed charges against four individuals on January 14, 2022.
The victim’s family expressed satisfaction with the verdict, which came nearly five years after the murder.
