Most of Comilla city has been disrupted by a gas shortage for two straight days. Some areas have no gas at all and others have only very low pressure, stopping cooking and increasing the cost and difficulty of using alternative fuel. Restaurants are also facing a surge in customers.
The most worrying issue is that Bakhrabad Gas Distribution Company Limited cannot say when supply will return to normal. Resident Sakhawat Hossain said his home had been without gas for more than 31 hours and his family had to buy food from restaurants. Homemaker Khaleda Akter said she cooked on an electric stove the previous day but had to use a temporary stove after electricity also failed.
Restaurant manager Asim Kumar said customer pressure had suddenly increased and staff could barely keep up with demand for rice, bread and biscuits. BGCL said adverse weather had reduced LNG supply from the floating terminal, cutting national gas supply and causing low pressure across its distribution area. The effects include Comilla, Noakhali, Chandpur, Feni, Lakshmipur and Brahmanbaria. Customers can call 16513.
Gas had not returned to normal anywhere in Comilla city by 5pm Thursday. BGCL officials said they had no definite timetable and that adverse weather offered no immediate good news. Residents are demanding a quick solution.
