A 16-year-old boy died on Thursday afternoon after collapsing during a football match at the Ajan field in Gangni upazila of Meherpur.
The boy was taking part in a friendly match between teenagers from Ajan in Gangni upazila and Buripota village in Meherpur Sadar upazila. He was the son of a Malaysia-based migrant worker from Buripota.
Two of his teammates said he suddenly sat down on the pitch during play and then began complaining of chest pain. He was taken to the Gangni Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
Nahid Hossain, the physician on duty in the emergency department of the Gangni Upazila Health Complex, said the boy had died before he was brought to hospital. A heart attack was suspected, he said. The cause of death has not been formally established.
Muhaddid Murshed, officer-in-charge of Gangni police station, confirmed the death and said a police team had reached the scene.
BD Global Times is not naming the boy or his family because he was a minor.
