The contribution of marginal farmers is extremely important to ensuring the country’s economy and food security, and the government is working tirelessly to secure farmers’ welfare and fair prices for their produce, Deputy Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Barrister Kaiser Kamal has said.
He said strengthening the rural economy and ensuring better livelihoods for farmers was one of the main goals of the government’s development plans, and that the government was committed to making field-level agricultural services more effective, increasing the use of modern farming technology and expanding the support farmers need.
He made the remarks on Tuesday (30 June) when an 11-member delegation of marginal farmers from various unions of Durgapur upazila in Netrokona paid a courtesy call on him at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
During the meeting, the Deputy Speaker listened to the delegation and gave assurances that issues such as the construction of local roads, bridges and culverts, the prevention of river erosion, building a drug-free society, removing inequality and obtaining farmer cards would be considered seriously.
He said the development of farmers meant the development of the country, and that parliament and the government would always play a cooperative role in implementing the laws, policies and programmes needed to protect farmers’ interests. He also pledged support for building farmers’ capacity to face the challenges of climate change, expanding technology-based farming and helping them market their produce more easily.
Earlier, on Monday afternoon, a delegation of marginal farmers from various unions of Durgapur upazila had paid a courtesy call on him, raising issues including the supply of harvesters, the availability of fertiliser and quality seed, the expansion of irrigation facilities and fair prices for farm produce, along with various problems farmers face and new possibilities in the sector.
