Kuwaiti authorities have moved Bangladeshi and other expatriates out of various buildings in the Hasabiya and Abbasiya areas as part of a drive to remove risky buildings and prevent major accidents. A temporary shelter has been set up for the evacuated expatriates at a government school in the Hasabiya area. The Bangladesh embassy in Kuwait announced this in a notice on its Facebook page on Friday (17 July) night, local time.
The notice said an embassy team had visited the shelter in person to check on the Bangladeshi nationals there. Led by embassy counsellor and mission head Mohammad Moniruzzaman and labour welfare wing counsellor Shoaib-ul-Islam Tarafdar, the team spoke with the expatriates and also met local Kuwaiti officials. Under the authorities’ decision, expatriates with valid documents are being allowed to leave the shelter after verification, while those staying illegally will be sent back to their countries through a deportation centre. Kuwaiti officials told the team the drive was being run to remove expired and risky buildings and to act against foreign nationals staying illegally, and that similar drives were being prepared in other areas.
Those in the temporary shelter may stay there on showing the necessary documents but cannot leave for work or any other reason. Given the situation, the Bangladesh embassy has urged Bangladeshi nationals in Kuwait to keep all valid residence documents up to date and to always carry a civil ID or valid identity card when going out.
