One person was killed and four others injured in a series of shootings in Kansas City, Missouri, in the United States. Among the wounded was an Uber driver who was carrying supporters of the Argentina football team.
Police said a 22-year-old suspect in the case remained at large and was being treated as armed and dangerous.
Five shootings took place over about a five-mile area of the city between 6:00 and 6:30 pm local time on Tuesday (16 June). Three of them occurred on Interstate 70 and Interstate 670. The locations were at least four miles from Arrowhead Stadium, where the Argentina–Algeria match was played.
Two Argentina supporters told the Argentine outlet La Nación that they were heading to the stadium by Uber when a car pulled up alongside and fired two shots, hitting the Uber driver in the leg. At first they thought a tyre had burst, then realised the driver had been wounded.
After the incident they were taken to a police station to give statements, and officers later drove them to the stadium in a patrol car. Police said the Uber driver’s injury was not serious and his life was not in danger.
According to police, the cars were travelling eastbound during the three highway shootings. The other incidents happened on Truman Road, a main city street.
Three adults and a teenager were wounded and all were taken to hospital. Police said one of the adults was in a critical condition.
At around 6:30 pm, police responded to a report of a car hitting a pole on Truman Road. The driver was taken to hospital, where doctors found a gunshot wound, and he later died.
Police officer Jacob Becchina said all of the victims reported that shots were fired at their vehicles while they were driving on streets or highways.
Investigators believe the non-fatal shootings were carried out within a short span of time by the same suspect.
Police later identified the suspect at a house in the suburb of Independence and raided it, but when they entered at around 8:00 am on Wednesday he was not there.
Kansas City, Kansas police have also issued an arrest warrant against the suspect over an 11 June incident involving the illegal use of a firearm.
