Anyone who dies in childhood has no sins. So at the child’s funeral the prayer is less for forgiveness than that God accept the child as provision sent ahead for the hereafter. After the third takbir of the janazah prayer this supplication is recited for the sinless child:
“Allahummaj’alhu lana faratan waj’alhu lana ajran wa dhukhran waj’alhu lana shafi’an wa mushaffa’an.”
Meaning: “O God, make him for us a forerunner (one who goes ahead of the caravan and prepares the way for those behind). Make him for us a reward and a treasure laid up for the hereafter, and make him for us an intercessor whose intercession is accepted.”
If a sinless child departs before reaching puberty, it is not a curse. Islam teaches, as a deep consolation, that these innocent young lives will wait as good news of paradise and a means of intercession for their parents at the hard reckoning of the hereafter.
