Jamaat-e-Islami distributed 3,000 mosquito nets on Saturday among residents of the Korail area, ward 19 of Dhaka North City Corporation, to raise public awareness of dengue prevention. The nets were handed out at an event organised by the Gulshan West thana unit of Jamaat at the Banani Model High School ground by the chief guest, Mohammad Salim Uddin, ameer of Jamaat’s Dhaka city north unit and a mayoral candidate.

He said: “People in this country are very helpless today. In this country the law is on the side of those who have power. Today they will demand extortion money from you; if you do not pay you will be beaten, beaten to death with iron rods, and your office will be vandalised. This exploiting group is sitting in power and exploiting the people. So you must give leadership to people who will understand your problems and solve them.”

On healthcare he said ordinary people in the country do not get proper treatment and are not properly served if they go to hospital, whereas developed countries have very good systems. “In the days ahead the people will no longer support extortionists and the corrupt, God willing,” he said.

On dengue awareness he said water must not be allowed to stand where it collects, because the Aedes mosquito breeds in such water. People must be careful that water and rubbish do not build up around them, raise awareness and keep their surroundings clean. Anyone who gets dengue should seek treatment without panicking.

He said that if Jamaat-e-Islami, which is working for the welfare of the people and ordinary people in particular, can come to power in the city corporation and in government, the pain, hardship, discrimination and trampling of rights seen today will be removed. “Put honest, able and God-fearing people in charge of the city and the state once, and the people’s rights will be established, God willing,” he said.

The event was chaired by Gulshan West thana ameer Mahmudur Rahman Azad and conducted by its secretary, Muhammad Ismail Hossain. Muhammad Yasin Arafat, assistant secretary of the Dhaka city north unit, was the special guest. Local leaders and councillor candidates were present. The nets were provided courtesy of Dr SM Khaliduzzaman.
