GOPALGANJ — Two brothers in Kashiani upazila have been arrested on charges of beating their parents and trying to bury them alive in the courtyard after the parents refused to hand over money from a land sale, police said. The two accused have been sent to jail.

The incident took place on Sunday night (January 11) in Bishwanathpur village of Maheshpur Union in the upazila.

The accused are Russell Molla and Rana Molla, sons of Sattar Molla, a resident of the village. Sattar Molla said his sons beat him and his wife after he refused to give them money from a land sale. The brothers then dug a grave in the courtyard and tried to bury them alive, he said. Neighbors rushed to the scene after hearing their screams and rescued them.

The mother, Asma Begum, said, “The children I raised with such hardship don’t even give us food today. We live in a house provided by the government. They beat us over the land-sale money and tried to bury us alive.”

Neighbor Akkas Bhuiyan said Sattar Molla and Asma Begum have six children. He said the eldest son Russell and second son Rana had been physically and mentally abusing their parents for a long time over family property. “We heard the sons were digging a grave in the courtyard to bury their parents. We rushed over and saw that a grave had indeed been dug,” he said.

Sattar Molla filed a written complaint at Kashiani police station on Monday (January 12) afternoon. Police arrested Russell Molla and Rana Molla based on the complaint.

Kashiani police officer-in-charge Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman said the two accused were arrested based on the complaint and sent to jail through the court on Tuesday (January 13) afternoon.
