NARAYANGANJ — A joint security force operation in Araihazar upazila has recovered weapons and ammunition from the ancestral home of a former Chhatra Dal leader. Since the raid, the former leader Mobarak Hossain and his followers have been staging show-of-force rallies in the area for two consecutive days, locals alleged, sparking fear among residents.

The army and police launched a special operation on Friday (January 9) from dawn until noon in the Kalapaharia Union, a Meghna riverine area. During the raid, one pistol and 10 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the abandoned house of Abul Kashem in Kadamirchar. Police said the weapons had been looted from a police station during the July mass uprising.

A case has been filed under the Arms Act against Abul Kashem in connection with the recovered weapons, police said. He has been on the run since the incident. Abul Kashem is the father of Mobarak Hossain, the former member secretary of Araihazar upazila Chhatra Dal.

Several local residents said Mobarak Hossain and his followers have been holding processions and show-of-force rallies in the area since the operation. They said the open show of force has created fear and a sense of insecurity in the locality.

Araihazar police officer-in-charge Md. Alauddin said one pistol and 10 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the Kadamirchar area of Kalapaharia Union. A case has been filed in the name of Abul Kashem, who is currently on the run, he said.

Multiple attempts to reach Mobarak Hossain by phone for comment failed as his number was switched off. A message sent via WhatsApp also went unanswered.
