GOPALGANJ — A three-month-old baby was killed and seven others injured after being thrown from the mother’s lap in a head-on collision between an electric autorickshaw (battery-powered ezi-bike) and a Mahindra autorickshaw in Tungipara upazila.
The accident took place around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday (January 15) on a road near Chaprail bridge in Gopalpur Union of the upazila.
Four of the injured received primary care at Tungipara upazila health complex. Three others were sent to Gopalganj district hospital in critical condition, Tungipara police officer-in-charge Ayub Ali said.
The dead infant, Rishi Majumder, was the son of Raimohan Majumder of Joyaria village in Gopalpur Union of the upazila.
Ayub Ali said a passenger-carrying Mahindra was traveling from Kotalipara to Tungipara, while a passenger-carrying ezi-bike was going from Joyaria to Majhbari in Kotalipara. The two vehicles collided head-on when they reached the road near Chaprail bridge in Gopalpur. The three-month-old, riding in the ezi-bike on the mother’s lap, was thrown out and killed on the spot. Seven others were injured. Locals rescued the injured and took them to Tungipara hospital, he said.
Legal proceedings are underway, the officer said.
