MYMENSINGH — Authorities in Ishwarganj upazila of Mymensingh seized 14 sacks of rice from the government’s food assistance program, sold under a 15-taka-per-kilogram scheme, during a raid Saturday in the Joypur area, officials said.

The seizure took place Saturday afternoon, March 14, in the Joypur area of Ishwarganj Union, officials said.

Local sources said the upazila administration and police conducted the joint raid based on a tip that rice bearing official government seals was being stockpiled for illegal resale. Officers searched the home and shop of Jubayer, 22, the son of Joypur village resident Ishaq Mia, and recovered 14 sacks of 30 kg each, the sources said. The total amount of rice recovered was 420 kg, with an estimated market value of about 14,000 taka.

The operation was led by Upazila Executive Officer Sanjida Rahman, who serves as the executive magistrate of the mobile court. Ishwarganj Police Station Sub-Inspector Khalilur Rahman and a police team were also present.

Sanjida Rahman, the upazila executive officer, said any attempt to illegally stockpile or sell rice allocated under the government’s food assistance program for the poor is a punishable offense. The upazila administration will continue surveillance and raids to prevent such irregularities, she said.

The seized rice is being held in the custody of the upazila council and will be distributed to the poor, the destitute and the needy on Monday, she said.
